This is a print by artist Walter Richards, titled C-54 at Quinto Mission, Ecuador 1956. I purchased it in a frame; it appears to have a signature at the bottom in pencil by the artist. I have not removed the print from the frame. I will be giving dimensions of the frame and of the print inside the framed mat. If I need to remove from the frame let me know but I hated to tear the backing off unless needed.
18 3/4 x 21 5/8 inside frame; what's visible inside the mat is 15 1/2 x 11 3/4
Hello, this item is a mid 20th century photographic or photogravure style print depicting a United States Air Force C-54 aircraft at Quito Mission, Ecuador, dated 1956 and attributed to the photographer Walter Richards. The C-54 Skymaster was a four-engine military transport aircraft widely used by the United States Air Force during the 1940s and 1950s, particularly in logistical missions, diplomatic transport, and international operations in Latin America and other regions during the early Cold War period. Images of aircraft operations in South America during the 1950s were commonly produced by military photographers and independent documentary photographers who documented airfields, supply missions, and aviation development. The visible pencil inscription along the margin identifying the aircraft and location suggests the print was issued either as a limited photographic print or as a presentation print from the photographer rather than a mass commercial poster reproduction.
From a market standpoint, mid 20th century aviation photographs and documentary prints connected to specific aircraft models such as the C-54 generally appeal to collectors of aviation history and military photography. Values depend heavily on whether the print is an original photographic print, a later reproduction, and whether the pencil inscription is an authentic artist signature. Comparable vintage aviation photographic prints from the 1950s typically trade between $80 and $250 USD in the secondary market, with higher values only achieved when the photographer is well documented or the print is confirmed as a signed original. Based on the visible condition, framing, and the apparent pencil inscription, a realistic current market value for this example would fall in the range of approximately $100 to $200 USD.
