We believe this is an original watercolor painting by listed Italian artist Giovanni Ospitali. The subject is a rooftop panorama of Florence — the word "Firenze" is written in the lower left of the painting, along with what appears to be "Panorama." The artist's signature is in the lower right. Inherited from a family friend. Note: we are unsure of the full painting dimensions as the mat/frame may be covering additional portions of the work — the visible image area is approximately 12" x 15". The frame is in great condition. The back shows the original cardboard/paper backing which is aged with some tears and wear consistent with age. Two labels are present on the back: - Rose Frame Shop, Ferndale, Michigan, dated May 1, 1959 — indicating the painting was framed or re-framed on that date and therefore predates 1959 - "Belew, 1525 Cherboneau, Detroit, Michigan 48207" — the prior owner's (deceased) address label, suggesting the painting was previously owned in Detroit before coming to California. Bought by the owner in Italy.
12 inches x 15 inches (painting); framed dimensions approximately 19.5" x 24"
Hello, this item is an original watercolor painting attributed to Giovanni Ospitali depicting a panoramic rooftop view of Florence with the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and its famous dome visible in the background. The composition focuses on the layered terracotta rooftops and architectural density of the historic city center, leading the viewer’s eye toward the Duomo and surrounding landmarks. The work is signed in the lower right and also includes the handwritten title “Firenze Panorama.” This type of architectural cityscape watercolor was commonly produced by Italian artists during the mid twentieth century for collectors and visitors, particularly in cities such as Florence, Venice, and Rome. Giovanni Ospitali appears to have been active in this tradition, producing finely executed watercolor views that emphasize atmosphere, perspective, and recognizable monuments.
The reverse of the frame includes a label from the Rose Frame Shop in Ferndale, Michigan and a date stamp of May 1, 1959, indicating that the piece was framed or sold in the United States at that time and therefore likely dates from the 1950s or slightly earlier. A second label referencing an address in Detroit further supports its mid twentieth century ownership history in Michigan. Works by regional Italian watercolorists depicting famous city views were widely collected during this period and remain appreciated today as decorative fine art. Based on the medium, subject matter, signed attribution, size of approximately 12 × 15 inches for the visible image area, and comparable auction and gallery sales for similar Italian watercolor cityscapes of the period, the current secondary market value typically ranges between $250 and $500 USD, with a reasonable fair market value for this example around $300 to $400 USD.
