Lane Furniture Company began producing cedar chests in 1912 in Altavista, Virginia, making them one of the most recognized American hope chests. Lined with aromatic cedar to repel moths and protect textiles, they were popular gifts for young women starting households. Lane chests are notable for their quality construction, varied revival and mid-century styles, and serial numbers that encode production dates. They remain widely collected as classic examples of 20th-century American furniture.
Because they were so popular, cedar chests made by Lane are not rare and even those in excellent gently-used condition rarely bring more than $50 when sold at auction, though when they sell at estate sales and by dealers, they are usually priced closer to $75-100.
