This painting has been in our family ever since my great grandfather bought it back from England about 1927. It has been hanging in our family homes ever since. Some restoration is necessary. An oil on canvas by W.G. Webb (British, 1860-1895). The untitled image, depicting several vessels near port in rough seas, is signed at lower left and framed, measuring 16" x 24". While the quality of work is at the upper end of known examples, there is an unfortunate tear to the canvas, and age related craqule to the paint.
Auction results for this artist are varied, and show a trend of minimal interest. The highest noted sale value for a work measuring 26" x 36" overall was $2600 + buyer's premium. Several other examples have appeared and sold under $1000. In good condition within a well publicized auction, this painting would likely have a $1500-$2000 estimate. With the current damages, it would be expected to face an estimate of perhaps $200-$300 as there is little to no interest in works of this nature requiring costly restoration. A reasonable insurance replacement value, prior to the damage, would be $3500.
