Description

You came highly recommended to me. In no way am I trying to tell you how to go about your job but it is important that I address some frustrating issues from 2 reputable online appraisal services . I believe this info is helpful to anybody. There are 2 artists with the same name & conflicting dates but somewhat similar works. DOB & DOD: 1941-1997 & 1871-1920. The French artist Paul Renard 1941-1997 is known to sign his oil paintings with a capital "P" followed by a period then "Renard" now that I got that out of the way the first appraisal I received they said it was by Caroline Burnett. Although the works are similar, it is signed by Paul Bernard making it laughable. I was embarrassed for them so I said nothing and just look for another appraisal. That one came back as "unverifiable". Again, Im I'm sure you understand my frustrations for I could easily pointed out a dozen different pieces of the artist's work myself. This original oil painting by Paul Renard is a cityscape featuring a street in Paris depicted near landmark Notre Dame. Oil on canvas. Probably mid century 1970s production.

What does this mean?

Hello, this item is an oil on canvas painting depicting a Parisian street scene with Notre Dame Cathedral in the background, signed “P. Renard” in the lower right corner. Works of this type belong to a large group of decorative European cityscape paintings produced during the mid 20th century, particularly between the 1950s and 1970s, when Paris street scenes became highly popular with tourists and collectors seeking romanticized views of the city. These paintings were often executed in studios in France and occasionally in Belgium or Italy, using quick impressionistic brushwork, warm tonal palettes, and recognizable landmarks such as Notre Dame, Montmartre, or the Seine. The composition, painterly technique, and stylized figures visible here correspond closely with this decorative school of Parisian street painting rather than with documented works by a widely recognized academic or museum listed painter. Signatures such as “P. Renard” frequently appear on these works and often represent studio pseudonyms or lesser documented commercial painters working within this genre.

From a market standpoint, mid 20th century decorative Paris street scene oils remain collectible primarily for their decorative appeal rather than artist attribution. Comparable oil paintings of similar size, subject, and execution typically trade in regional auction houses, secondary art markets, and online platforms between $150 and $450 USD depending on condition, size, and framing. Given the visible condition, moderate scale of approximately 19.5 x 14 inches for the canvas, and the decorative quality of the composition, a realistic current market value for this example would fall in the range of $200 to $400 USD.
