Knightia Fish Fossil & Impression (Clupeidae family)
Eocene Epoch (56 to 34 million years ago)
Possible discovery from the Green River Formation, North America, United States
Dimentions: 16 “ x 2.5” x 3.5”
This Knightia fish fossil example represents an exceptionally well-preserved specimen of an extinct genus of freshwater herring from the Eocene Epoch. Discovered primarily in the fine-grained limestone deposits of the Green River Formation spanning Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado, Knightia is a common vertebrate fossil and Wyoming's official state fossil.
The specific minerals involved in the fossilization of fish, such as those found in the Green River Formation, primarily include calcite, silica, and the original bone mineral itself, hydroxyapatite. The process involves a combination of permineralization and mineral replacement.
This example is a fossil plate that has been split open to reveal both the actual fossil impression and the mirror image impression of the fish on opposing slabs of rock. The presence of both the fossil and impression give this example a higher FMV.
Previous: "Hi, Jeff,
Can you please give information you have on where this fossil was discovered? Where did you purchase this fossil? Thank you for the helpful information."
My late Dad purchased it somewhere in the Southwestern USA around the mid 1970's. Also, the rock or enclosure only looks like a giant potato, it is not a potato like substance.
