Barrel is 40” long with the entire rifle being 55.5” long. Was unable to find a reference for the proof mark but 1848 is stamped on the breach. The barrels diameter is approximately 13/16 of an inch. The rifle has brass fittings all with proof marks of various quality except for the trigger mechanism. Rifle has been in my family for generations and was curious.
The rifle has been past down in my family originating with my great great great grandfather in the US. As far as I know the rifle has not been exhibited.
Dear Aaron,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. My sincere apologies for the delay with the appraisal.
The presented object appears to be a percussion rifle made in the 19th century. The total length is 55.5 inches. It is marked with a crowned S which is used as a guarantee mark in some German states. Also, the rifle is stamped with 1848 on the breach.
Comparable objects were recently offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 150 to 250 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
George
Hello,
Here are a few more photos of things I never noticed before. Did my best with the photos in person there is a crown on the side and looks like 5h on the barrel. Thanks
