Title: Bruxeliae Belgii Cathol Ornamentum Et Ducatus Brabantiae Metropolis Print has no dots in the image. Paper is textured and there is a definite plate impression. Appears, also, to be hand tinted, although faded. Pictorially, the print matches other images of this map found online except for two omissions in the map’s bottom, panorama view of the city’s buildings; the buildings are not identified and along the bottom right side, the 2 gallows and hanging man are missing. Very minor foxing, bottom right margin & one spot. Some creasing along top right. Back of frame has a label which reads: Cadres D’Art, Arthur Dehoy, 13 Rue Veydt 13, Saint-Gilles-Bruxelles. Photos were taken through glass. More photos are available or could be taken if required.
Without removing it from the frame, printed image measures 22 1/2” x 19 5/16" with the sheet as seen inside the frame 25 3/8” x 22 7/16”(basically the size of the frame opening) so the actual sheet size would be a bit larger.
Hi Gloria,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This appears to be on wove paper, which would be consistent with an 18th Century manufacture. Matthäus Seutter was a great German cartographer and his maps are well known, with ones in good condition selling for about $700-1,000 at auction (which are the fair market values Mearto assigns) and about $2,000 in a retail setting from a dealer. The fact that yours is slightly faded warrants a slightly lower fair-market value of $500-700.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
Map of Catholic Brussels, Belgium
after Matthäus Seutter, 1678-1757
Lithograph on wove paper with hand-coloring, Inscribed "Bruxeliae Beglii Cathol. Ornamentum et Ducatus Brabantiae Metropolis . ." upper and lower right.
plate mark: 22-1/2 by 19-5/16 inches
CONDITION: Framed. Some minor fading throughout. Value assumes no tears or repairs, and that this map has not been laid down
PROVENANCE: Acquired at a garage/yard sale; previously handled by Cadres D’Art, Arthur Dehoy, Bruxelles
$500-700*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
