My father bought this oil painting in the 1980’s. Andre Kohn evidently paints his human subjects only from behind. I visited a gallery in Charleston, South Carolina recently that displays his paintings. I was told that Mr Kohn is very famous, has become mentally ill with schizophrenia and that they are having difficulty getting any further art from him. The one painting that they had for sale was larger, recent and for sale for 30k. I showed them a picture of my painting and they said it was “quite valuable and a great example of his earlier works”.

Dear Les Jones,
Thank you for your appraisal submission. The work is an oil painting on canvas by Andre Kohn (Russian-American, 20th/21st century). Titled "A Connoisseur," the work depicts a near-silhouette figure viewing a framed painting. It is signed "Kohn" to the right edge. The work's details are inscribed and labeled to the verso of the frame. From the image provided, the work appears to be in good condition. It measures 15 x 9 inches in frame.
Andre Kohn studied art at the University of Moscow amongst Russian Impressionists. In 1993, he moved to the United States and quickly received attention for his art. His work prominently depicts singular figures in a muted tone and the impressionist style, much like that of the subject work. In the retail market, Kohn's paintings are sold around $30,000. Meanwhile in the secondary market, his paintings estimate between $1000-$2000.
Thank you again for your appraisal submission
Kind regards,
Charlotte B.
