What does this mean?

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Pleasant Company dolls are highly collectible 18-inch historical dolls best known as the original American Girl dolls, created to combine play with education.

They were made in (West) Germany by Gotz for Pleasant Rowland, who founded Pleasant Company in 1986. Historical dolls represented different periods of American history, each with books telling their stories.

The Kirsten doll told the story of Kirsten Larson, a Swedish immigrant girl in 1854, that reflected real waves of Scandinavian settlement in the American Midwest. Her story introduces themes like pioneer life, homesteading, and cultural adaptation, which were rarely explored in children’s toys before.

Pleasant Company dolls - specifically this character doll - are currently retailing for between $200 and $400, though when they come up for auction, they usually bring about half that: $100-200.

If you're looking to sell this, because it has its original booklet, clothing and packaging, you should price it at $350-400.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A near vintage Pleasant Company Kirsten character doll
made by Gotz in West Germany, circa 1986
with looped blond braids, printed cotton dress with blue and red striped cotton apron, knit stockings and brown leather shoes; with original storybook and box.
18 inches tall
CONDITION: This appears to be in very good all-original condition
PROVENANCE: Original owner
$100-200*

I’ll hold on to her and not sell for the moment. My mother took the photos and didn’t remove her dress completely. If I find she is signed on her torso, what would the subsequent appraisal then be? Thank you, Ashley

Hi Ashley,
The value probably increase a bit - Pleasant Rowland isn't known to have signed many of these dolls, unlike Cabbage Patch doll creator, Xavier Roberts.
