There is evidence of a small repair to the canvas and remnants of label on the back with a description and lot number perhaps from prior auction. Name plate is C Mendoza. Described as bust length portrait of native musician.
I do not know as this was an estate purchase and no information was offered.
Dear Seth,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on canvas with the measurements of 27 x 21 1/2 inches. The painting depicts a violin player and was an allegory of the sense of the hearing. A label identifies this painting as a blind violin player which is a misunderstanding of the motif. This painting is regarding the information on the label signed with the name C. Mendoza. Sadly no further information regarding the biography of this artist is mentioned in reference books or similar databases. This painting was made after motifs of the 17th century in the late 19th century.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 150 to 250 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
