Hi Dana,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The Mattel Collector 40th Edition Anniversary Barbie Doll from 1999 is significant both historically and culturally because it commemorates a major milestone in the Barbie brand and the toy industry. Released in 1999, this doll marked 40 years since Barbie’s debut in 1959, recognizing her status as an iconic figure in popular culture.
Unlike standard play dolls, this edition was designed specifically for collectors. It often featured luxury materials, intricate costumes, and detailed facial sculpting, reflecting Mattel’s growing focus on the collector market in the 1990s.
Production was limited, making it more desirable to collectors than mass-market play Barbies. Many came in display boxes with certificates of authenticity, reinforcing their collectible status.
Despite the limited production, values for this doll remain modest and I can find several examples currently retailing online for less than $50 and even though this is in its original box, I would be quite surprised if it sold at auction for more than $20 or $30.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
