Hello,
This is a luxurious, hand-carved folding screen consisting of six rosewood-framed panels, each set with intricately carved nephrite jade plaques. The jade panels depict traditional Asian flora and fauna—birds, trees, and auspicious animals—highly valued in Chinese decorative arts for their symbolism of peace, prosperity, and longevity.
The heavy and richly colored rosewood, paired with the labor-intensive jade carvings, strongly suggests it was either a commissioned export piece for a wealthy client or intended for an elite Chinese household. Jade and hardwood screens were prized items in scholar’s studios, reception halls, and private residences during the late Qing and early Republican periods.
