Looks like hand carved silver Buddha sitting on a pedestal with his hands resting in his lap
7” tall, 4” wide, 3 “ deep
Hello,
This item is a solid silver Buddha statue, measuring approximately 7 inches in height, 4 inches in width, and 3 inches in depth. The figure depicts a seated Buddha in a meditative pose with hands resting in the lap, a traditional representation of serenity and enlightenment. The statue appears to have been hand-carved, with visible tooling marks and a distinct patina suggesting age and exposure to the elements. The base shows oxidation consistent with silver alloy, though metallurgical analysis would be necessary to confirm full composition.
Based on its iconography, proportions, and wear patterns, the statue is stylistically consistent with mid to late 19th-century East Asian devotional figures, possibly from China or Japan. However, no inscriptions or hallmarking are visible in the provided images, limiting definitive attribution. The weight of 27 ounces further confirms its substantial silver content, which contributes significantly to its intrinsic value, apart from artistic or historical merit.
Peter, I see where you’re coming from. The thing is, without clear hallmarks, inscriptions, or provenance, the piece doesn’t stand out enough artistically or historically to significantly elevate its value beyond the silver content. Yes, it’s hand-carved and from the 19th century, but there are many similar devotional figures out there, and unless it’s tied to a known school, maker, or has unique stylistic traits, the market tends to price it conservatively
So I tried to register with catawiki and they say they do not support Canada deals. I am in Canada. Can you help?
Thank you. It seems odd that a hand carved artifact from the mid 19th century would only carry a value of 900 USD when the silver melt value itself is just slightly less than that. No artistic value?
Peter
