What does this mean?

Hello, this item is a Chinese 7-stars Jian sword, traditionally associated with Daoist symbolism and martial training. The Jian is a double-edged straight sword that has been a symbol of nobility and moral virtue throughout Chinese history. This example features seven brass or copper alloy studs on the blade or hilt, a design that alludes to the Big Dipper constellation, believed to bring protection and cosmic alignment. The guard and pommel appear to be cast in a decorative alloy with motifs consistent with late Qing to Republic period ornamental swords. The scabbard shows stamped geometric and symbolic designs, including Chinese coin patterns and dragons, suggesting either a ceremonial or decorative function. The oxidation seen at the hilt is typical for an object of its age, and the blade remains unsharpened, reinforcing the possibility of it being used for ritual or display rather than combat.

Based on the materials, decoration, and overall condition, this Jian most likely dates to the early 20th century, possibly between 1910 and 1940. It reflects traditional craftsmanship but does not exhibit the forging quality or patination expected in imperial-period martial weapons. The market for such swords remains strong among collectors of Asian arms and martial arts enthusiasts, especially those interested in Daoist iconography. Considering its condition, intact scabbard, and decorative elements, the current fair market value of this sword would be in the range of $400 to $700 USD. If additional provenance or signs of earlier dating emerge, the value could increase.
