An original religious drawing by Helmuth Uhrig that is signed and dated 1957. This is one of three Uhrig drawings given to me in the early 1970’s. The drawing is on a thin onion paper. There are some age spots on the paper but none on the image he created.
18”x24”. The drawing is approximately 8 1/2”x 14 1/2”.
Hello,
Your item is an original ink drawing by the German religious artist Helmuth Uhrig, signed and dated 1957. Uhrig, who was active in the mid-20th century, is known for his spiritually charged compositions, often focused on abstract representations of liturgical or symbolic Christian themes. The use of stark black ink on a delicate onion-skin-like paper is consistent with Uhrig’s known techniques from that era, lending the work an air of solemn minimalism.
This particular drawing is of notable interest due to its strong visual rhythm created through repeated abstract forms that suggest figures in motion or prayer. The delicate linework, coupled with the bold ink contrast, aligns with Uhrig’s distinctive visual language, which blends sacred expressionism with German post-war abstraction. The signature and 1957 date located on the lower edge further validate its attribution. Although there are some minor age spots on the paper, they do not affect the image area and are typical of works on such thin and fragile paper from this time.
In today’s market, Helmuth Uhrig’s drawings are relatively scarce outside of specialized religious or German modernist collections.
Thank you for your appraisal. I am submitting the two other Uhrig drawings in my possession for appraisal as well.
