"A Long Walk" by Spyros Vassiliou 1961
04 December 2019
Description

Greek artist Spyros Vassiliou painted "A Long Walk" on canvas using egg yolk and various colors of tempura mixed together. The painting depicts Athens, Greece as seen from the Mediterranean Sea, showing the mountains and clouds above. In the sky is a large frame in gold leaf showing people walking as if to heaven. Spyros painted a characiture of himself painting at an easel in the bottom right hand corner of the gold frame. There is also gold leaf painted on the bottom of the picture in the water and sand areas. It has stamps on the back showing it was hung at one time in a museum as well as the duty stamp from when the original American owner brought it back to the US through customs.

Provenance

The original owner worked for Union Carbide in the early 1960s and was stationed in Greece to establish business relationships for the purchase of oil from Saudi Arabia. The bought several of Vassiliou's paintings while there. They passed away and I purchased this painting at an estate sale in Pinetop-Lakeside, Arizona. I live nearby in Show Low, AZ.
