My mother bought this piece of art for me when I was 10 years old. From a gallery next to the Whitney Museum when it was located on Madison Avenue on the upper east side. The painting is in the original frame. Excellent condition. So sorry but I don't know what to call the thick uneven whitish substance upon which there are black lined drawings of a boy and a girl holding hands.

Hello, this item is a small mixed media painting depicting a boy and a girl holding hands, rendered in a deliberately naive and emotionally restrained style. The work combines black line drawing with a thick, textured white ground, likely gesso or plaster based medium, applied unevenly to create surface relief. The visual language aligns with mid to late 20th century expressionist and outsider influenced gallery art, particularly work circulating in New York in the 1970s to 1980s. The signature visible in the lower left corner and the dated inscription suggest an individual contemporary artist rather than a known blue chip name. The proximity of purchase to the Whitney Museum on Madison Avenue supports acquisition from a small commercial gallery catering to emerging or independent artists rather than an institutional context.
Condition appears excellent, with no visible losses, cracking, or restoration, and the original frame contributes modestly to presentation value. Small scale mixed media works of this type by non canonical but competently represented artists typically trade based on aesthetic appeal rather than artist reputation. Comparable works from New York gallery circuits of the period generally achieve prices between USD 400 and USD 800.
