I’d like to know about the artist - Chinese or Japanese? Artists name and any information about the artist.
The painting is 11 3/4 X 18 1/4. Framed it is 15 1/2 X 23 1/2
Hello, this item is a watercolor painting depicting an iris plant with a butterfly in flight above. The work shows stylistic elements of East Asian painting, most likely Chinese, suggested by the brushwork, composition, and presence of two red seals at the lower right. The seals and inscription indicate an artist’s signature and possibly a studio name, which is customary in Chinese literati and decorative painting. The balanced placement of the flowers and butterfly reflects traditional themes of harmony and nature, common in both Qing dynasty painting and 20th-century revival works. The painting is mounted with silk matting in a gilt frame, typical of mid-20th-century framing for export pieces.
The dimensions of the artwork itself are 11 ¾ x 18 ¼ inches, with a framed size of 15 ½ x 23 ½ inches. The painting appears in good condition from the provided images, with no major visible stains, tears, or fading. As for value, unsigned or workshop Chinese watercolors with seals, when not attributed to a known master, generally range between 200 and 600 USD at auction. If further research confirms the identity of the artist through the seals, the value could rise significantly, particularly if the painter belongs to a recognized 20th-century school. In its present form and based on stylistic assessment, the fair market value is estimated at 300 to 500 USD.
Thank you so much for all the information you provided regarding my watercolor painting. I now know a whole lot more about it - I am so pleased with David’s appraisal. He said that the seals and inscription on the bottom right corner might reveal the artists and studio’s name with further research. I would love to know the artists name especially, if possible. Can you do this there at Mearto? Thanks for any assistance you can give me.
