Thin woven tapestry approx 2 1/2ft w by 5 ft long. Multiple cells. Each cell is a scene from a story. Each cell contains a picture and text. A Judaica expert said it is probably Islamic. Tapestry was acquired by an American while working in Egypt in 1956 and passed on to me in 2013 (I have no details from him and he is very elderly).
It was given to an American engineer while working in Egypt in 1956.
Dear Kristina,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil or acrylic paint on canvas with the measurements of 2 1/2ft w by 5 ft long. The painting depicts in many compartments a story. The typical style and the letters are an obvious hint that this piece was made in Ethiopia. This piece was probably made in the last third of the 20th century because of the coloring and the condition itself.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 100 to 200 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
Dear Kristina,
Try to find someone who can speak and read Ethiopian.
With kind regards,
Georg
Thank you. Any idea what it says or where I can go to find out?
