This abstract landscape has vivid colors and is by Marjorie Bishop --it features her characteristic coarse sand mixed in with the paint. Signed bottom right corner I may be interested in selling, depending on the valuation. Condition looks very good with a few extremely tiny flecks of paint missing. Signed on back by former owner in Winnetka Illinois area. Dear Sarah Chodera,
Thank you for your appraisal submission. The work is a Modern mixed media painting of sand and oil on canvas, measuring 24 x 30 inches. The painting is by Marjorie Bishop (American, 1904-1996) and depicts a near abstract sunrise or sunset in deep reds, burgundy, and blue. It is signed to the lower right and inscribed by a previous owner to the verso. From the images provided, the work appears to be in good condition. There are faint frame abrasions to the edges, most visible along the lower right.
Little biographical information is known of Bishop's life. She is documented to have lived around Massachusetts and New York. Only a few of her paintings have appeared on the secondary market, but they exhibit her stylistic explorations, including still life, maritime, figural, and animal depictions all of which heavily lean towards modernist, abstract tendencies. Only a few of these works were sold in the last five years, and the sales are too sparse to note any specific buyer trends. Considering her overall sales history, we estimate the Fair Market Value of this work between $200 and $500, possibly towards the lower end of the range.
Thank you for your appraisal submission.
Kind regards,
Charlotte B.
