Hello Alana,
Thank you very much for submitting your item for an appraisal and for your patience. Can you tell me if the artwork is signed anywhere? I don't see a signature in the images provided, but perhaps you could see one if you look at it closely in person.
I am asking because I found a very similar work which sold at Bonhams last year: https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/164800415_adolf-schreyer-german-1828-1899-bedouin-on-a-white-horse-20-x-16in-508-x-406cm It is possible that your work is another version of this, or a copy after the original by another artist. I've found many different variations by Schreyer, so I think that the former scenario is likely.
Please just comment in the section below to let me know about the signature and I'll provide an appropriate appraisal. Thank you!
Kind regards,
Anne
Hello Alana,
Thank you very much for submitting your item for an appraisal and for the additional information.
As I mentioned before, I found a very similar work which sold at Bonhams last year:
https://www.bonhams.com/auction/28455/lot/1216/adolf-schreyer-german-1828-1899-bedouin-on-a-white-horse-20-x-16in-508-x-406cm/
According to Bonhams: "Adolf Schreyer must number among the most successful Orientalist painters of his generation. A favourite with both the German aristocracy and the most celebrated American families of the Gilded Age (including the Astors, Morgans, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts), Schreyer's paintings were at the centre of numerous international collections."
Authentic works attributed to Adolf Schreyer frequently sell for 5 or 6 figures at auction, with particularly high results achieved in Dubai:
https://www.bonhams.com/auction/18180/lot/72/adolf-schreyer-german-1828-1899-in-pursuit/
https://www.bonhams.com/auction/28164/lot/39/adolf-schreyer-german-1828-1899-the-standard-bearer/
I would expect the value of an authentic work attributed to Schreyer to be in line with these comparables. However, it is also possible (and indeed likely) that your painting is simply "in the manner of" Schreyer, which means it was painted by a different artist copying Schreyer's style. In this case, the current fair market value would be closer to $300 to 500.
If you would like to explore the possibility that the work could be authentic and worth more than my initial valuation, I would recommend that you visit our website www.authenticate-art.com or email [email protected] to learn more about the authentication services that we offer.
Thank you again and I hope that you have a wonderful day!
Kind regards,
Anne
Apologies - I wanted to ask family members for input. I do not see a signature on the painting, but have learned the painting was in the family since the 1970s. There was original paperwork at purchase but the process or organizing that has just begun. Any guidance you may have on its current state is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
