Heavy stone hand carved, height 13 inches, width 9 inches
Unknown history
Dear Stacey,
Thank you for your patience and help.
The presented object appears to be a bust made out of a cast stone mass with the measurements of 13 inches in height. The bust depicts a woman with a decorated costume and a large asymmetrical headdress. The details of the decor in the area of the collar, the hairband, and in the middle of the headdress suggest that this is not an artwork inspired by traditional African art. This vegetable and flame-similar decor is typical for the art of Indonesia and Thailand. Additionally, these asymmetrical headdresses can be found especially in Indonesia. There is no signature or stamp visible to identify the artist or maker. The argument for the identification of the material as a cast mass is the structure of the surface. We see bubbles and the cast surface was carved in in a second step after the cast. This piece was made in the last third of the 20th century.
Works by this artist were recently offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in good condition and there is a little damage at the stand visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 100 to 200 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
I have not found any signatures or markings.
Thank you very much I did figure out it was Indonesian and not African. I appreciate the time you took to thoroughly research my item.
Best wishes!

Greetings Georg, I hope the additional pictures are helpful. The color of the stone /material is very close to the shade of the statue.
