Dear Elizabeth Eoff,
Thank you for your appraisal submission. From the photographs provided, the work appears to be an acrylic painting on canvas. It depicts figures in a tiled-floor interior setting. The work is signed and dated to the verso and is attributable to Alan Weinstein (Canadian, born 1939). It measures 20 x 16 inches unframed, and it appears to be in good condition with minor wear to the frame.
According to a catalogue from Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre's 2018 "ALAN WEINSTEIN The Ontario Studio: Five Decades" exhibition, the artist explored an "Amish Series" depicting figures in interiors in the 1980s and then moved towards scenes of spare interiors with women, children, and chairs in the early 1990s. As the painting is dated to 1988, it sits neatly within this transition of work, as can be seen in the composition's subject. His later works moved figural themes into landscapes and exteriors.
Although Weinstein has a significant exhibition record, there is no auction or market record of his works. Comparisons can only be based on few available gallery prices, and therefore do not reflect auction success or buyer demand. Additionally, this painting is smaller in size than available comparisons. With this in mind, we estimate the Fair Market Value of this work between $2,000 and $5,000.
Thank you again for your appraisal submission. If you have any questions about your report, please leave a comment in the comment box below.
Kind regards,
Charlotte B.
