Arietites is a genus of massive, giant ammonites within the family Arietitidae. They are characterized by their planispiral shell; a spiral shape with subquadrate whorls and transverse ribs. Their most distinct feature is a set of three low keels on the outer edge (venter), separated by two parallel longitudinal grooves. When alive during the Early Jurassic Epoch, Arietites was a marine predator that looked much like a cross between a modern nautilus and a squid.
