Dear John Rigden,
Thank you for your appraisal submission. The work is a Still Life oil painting on canvas by Francesco Spicuzza (Italian-American, 1883–1961). It depicts a fruit plate and vase with flowers on a wooden chair, draped with a blouse. The work is signed "Spicuzza" to the lower left corner. From the photographs provided, the work appears to be in good condition with slight discoloration to the surface. The measurements provided are "281/2 X 341/2," likely in centimeters.
Spicuzza was born in Sicily, and moved to Wisconsin with his family as a child. When he was a young boy, his artistic potential was recognized by John Cramer, a prominent publisher in Milwaukee who encouraged and financially supported Spicuzza's studies. Spicuzza would go on to study at the Milwaukee Art Students' League as well as the New York Art Students' League. He is most well-known for his Impressionist style paintings. Spicuzza has a long secondary market record. Looking at these sales trends, his figural beach-scene paintings tend to sell the highest with a 2020 sale for $7,000 and a 2018 sale for $4,500. His still life paintings average lower, such as a 2024 sale of $800 and a 2025 sale of $650. Considering these records, we estimate the Fair Market Value of this work between $500 and $1000.
Due to the potential value of this work, this report is conditional based on the work's authenticity.
Kind regards,
Charlotte B.
