The book by Frazar Kirkland is fully entitled: "The pictorial book of anecdotes and incidents of the war of the rebellion, civil, military, naval and domestic; embracing the most brilliant and remarkable anecdotal events of the great conflict of the United States: Heroic, Patriotic, Political, Romantic, Humorous and Tragical from the time of the memorable toast of Andrew Jackson, uttered in 1830, in the presence of the original secession conspirators, to the assassination of President Lincoln, and the end of the war: with famous words and deeds of woman, sanitary and hospital scenes, prison experiences, &c." It may be a pre-first edition as the title page reads "Published by Subscription Only." It was published by the Hartford Publishing Company, Hartford CT, in 1866. The binding and pages are intact. Some foxing and wear are present. Cover is light brown/tan and black with some scratching/wear. It measures 7" x 10".
Passed down from my family. Uncertain as to exactly whose collection it belonged to, but most likely my third great grandmother Eliza Rich (Hall) Forster 1822-1903 whose brother John Hall supposedly died in the end of the Civil War.
Dear Stephen,
Once again, thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The appraised volume published by Hartford Publishing Co., 1866 appears to be in good condition. This is the first edition with a brown leather cover that has some scratches, marks, and rubs.
Once again, the estimation highlighted in red above is based on comparables offered and sold at auction in the last five years and the condition (based on photographs and comments provided) was taken into consideration when determining the estimate.
Best regards,
Karine
