This was sold to me around 15 years ago from a collector. It was sold as an antique. I have had it stored rather than displayed since then. I think it was sold as originating from Nigeria but could be wrong. It is hand carved wood and quite heavy. It has a burnt smell to it. It has a very aged/worn appearance to it.

Hello,
Your item is a handwoven wool flat weave rug, likely originating from the Middle East or Central Asia, possibly a tribal or nomadic weaving tradition. The geometric motifs and vivid colors, including the deep reds, blues, and ivory tones, suggest influences from Kilim weaving styles, commonly produced by Turkish, Persian, or Caucasian artisans. The zigzag borders and diamond medallion motifs are characteristic of Anatolian or Persian Kilims, often woven by skilled artisans for both decorative and utilitarian purposes.
The condition appears good, with some minor signs of wear, particularly in the fringe area, which is expected for older textiles of this nature. The woven structure remains intact, with no significant discoloration or damage beyond minor insect-related wear. The color retention is notable, indicating either high-quality natural dyes or careful preservation.
