Two plastic or composition dolls, unattributed American makers, 1940s
06 February 2025
Description

Two antique baby dolls. One made of soft rubber, movable limbs, plastic head, sleepy eyes, in good condition with no identifying manufacturer mark. The other is harder material, movable limbs, sleepy eyes, some cracks in the feet but no missing pieces, with no identifying manufacturing mark. These were passed down from my mother who was born in 1938 (since passed away). I was wondering if they hold any value. Regarding the question below on would I like you to promote the item and sell it - perhaps, depending on if it has any value.

Hi Daria,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
In the 1940s, doll manufacturing saw significant changes due to wartime material shortages and advancements in plastics. Composition Dolls (Early 1940s) were made from a mixture of sawdust, glue, cornstarch, resin, and wood pulp, composition dolls were a staple in the early part of the decade. These dolls were sturdy but prone to cracking and crazing (fine cracks in the surface). Brands like Effanbee, Madame Alexander, and American Character produced well-known composition dolls but these makers all marked their dolls.
As World War II ended, manufacturers began using hard plastic, a durable and lightweight alternative to composition. Hard plastic dolls were resistant to moisture and cracking, with more finely molded details. Ideal Toy Company and Vogue Doll were some of the best-known makers, but again, they all marked their dolls.
The color discrepancy between the doll with a lighter head and markedly darker body influences the value negatively.
While these may have great sentimental value to you because your mother owned them, they are worth $25-35 and $30-40

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
