1.5" wide blade, 33.5" long straight blade. Blade has "Runkel Solingen" engraved on the blade.
It was part of my fathers sword collection and purchased in the UK
Dear Fenella,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a typical Scottish broadsword with a hilted basket of how it was typical for Scottish troops and also in British service since the 18th century. This sword has no maker marks or proves marks to identify and date this piece. It was probably made in the 19th century by an unknown swordsmith. The blade was exported from Germany.
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 100 to 300 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
Dear Fenella,
Thank you for your email. Runkel is a small company in the German city of Solingen. Solingen is since the Medieval Age a center of blade production and exported these blades all over the world.
With kind regards,
Georg
Hi Georg,
What does the mark "Runkel Solingen" engraved on the blade mean?
Thanks,
Fenella
