Antique cast iron fireplace

Description

Description: Antique Cast Iron Fireplace Insert with Decorative Tiles I am seeking an appraisal for an antique cast iron fireplace insert. The piece features intricate metalwork with floral and scroll designs, along with decorative tiles in a rich amber and brown pattern. Based on its design and materials, I believe it may date from the late 19th or early 20th century, possibly Victorian or Edwardian in style. Measurements: • Height: 38 inches • Width: 38 inches • Depth: Approximately 12 inches Markings: • The back of the fireplace has several markings: • “No 60 38x38” — This may correspond to the model number and dimensions. • “RN 97689” — Likely a registered design or patent number, which could provide information on its date of manufacture. • Additional markings include “No 16 16 Fire”, which might indicate further model or catalog details. The fireplace is very heavy, confirming its cast iron construction. It shows some signs of wear consistent with age but remains structurally sound. There is some rust present, particularly on the back and interior sections. The tiles are mostly intact but have some chips and surface wear. Additional Information: I believe the fireplace could be British-made, possibly by a notable foundry like Coalbrookdale or Carron, given the quality of the casting and the intricate detailing. I would like to understand its provenance, period, and estimated value, considering its current condition.

What does this mean?

Hi Philip,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Victorian cast iron tile fireplaces were popular in 19th-century England, combining elegance and functionality. These fireplaces featured ornate cast iron surrounds, often embellished with intricate floral or geometric designs, and colorful ceramic tiles. The tiles, typically set around the fireplace insert, added vibrant decorative elements and could depict floral patterns, classical scenes, or nature motifs. Cast iron tile fireplaces were not only efficient in heating homes but also served as striking focal points in Victorian interiors.

Regrettably, there were many makers who did not sign or stamp their stoves, even those whose stoves equal yours in form and quality. I'm certain this was made in England but not made by either Coalbrookdale or Carron, both of which were proud to stamp or otherwise mark their wares.

When offered at auction today, most stoves of this size and decoration sell for between $400-600 at auction; please note this is different to websites like 1stDibs, which is a retail site and offers products that have usually been refurbished.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

Hi Delia

My parents gave it to me as they have gone into care. They bought it when they bought a previous house in Clovelly , NSW
That house was a 1920s cottage. Unfortunately that’s all I have.

Hi Philip,
Thank you for that additional information. I've expanded the dateline on this from mid 19th Century to include the 1920s but would not be surprised if it predated your parents' 1920s cottage. In my opinion, these are charming relics of a somewhat bygone era (I grew up in a Victorian that had a similar fireplace) which is perhaps why I've a fondness for them. I hold out slim hope that these come back in a big way, but realistically speaking that's unlikely to happen. At any rate, there's not much more I can say about your fireplace but please do let me know if you have questions, etc.
Thanks again for using Mearto and have a great day!
