Hi Danny,
Happy New Year and thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The Renaissance Revival period refers to an architectural and decorative style that emerged in the 19th century as a reinterpretation of Renaissance art and design. Originating in Europe, particularly in France, England, and Italy, it drew inspiration from the classical forms and ornamentation of the 15th and 16th centuries during the Italian Renaissance; it was adapted in the United States in the late 19th Century, with pieces being made into the 20th Century, as yours was.
Side chairs with tall backs are usually called Hall chairs or Back Stools and would have been placed in a hall where visitors to the house could wait to be seen; they are not designed to very comfortable and were generally not relied upon for extended periods of sitting (in the 15th and 16th century, they would have been made entirely of wood, without upholstery). It would have been common for these to have been made in larger sets of at least 4, placed throughout the sizeable house in a large mansion (see this link for what I mean: https://independentarchives.photoshelter.com/image/I00004ZH3RKNHJN0).
19th Century and earlier backstools usually bring about $400-600 EACH when they are offered at auction; new examples - such as yours - usually sell for about $150-250 each.
