I have two clocks that have been in my family for a long time, one of them for generations. I know one of them is quite old and it’s in pretty good shape. I’ve inherited it, but I really don’t know what it is that I’m looking at. I believe it still works though it may need some kind of tuneup. I’m looking to have an expert tell me what kind of clock this is and what value it may have. There are what appear to be two companion pieces. I've included a photo of them as well. Same inquiry for both clocks.
1st. Clock. 16 “ high, 9 1/2 “ wide, 8 1/2” deep
Hi Grant,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
You are correct that these pieces were made to go together; they form (part) of a garniture, a decorative set of matching or coordinated objects, typically displayed together as a group, often for ornamental purposes on a mantel, sideboard, or shelf. Clocks are most often the single central element and they were flanked by candlesticks or multi-arm candelabra, vases or covered urns, as in this case. Sometimes you'll have a 5-piece garniture, 3 is the most common number though that doesn't mean there might not have been more pieces that got lost or broken along the way.
This probably has maker's marks somewhere (though they might be obscured by the gilt bronze marks). The model doesn't immediately bring to mind an obvious maker, though the blue porcelain plaques and other elements are reminiscent of Sevres porcelain (Sevres didn't make clocks but they would have made pieces that clockmakers incorporated into their clocks.)
Three-piece gilt bronze mounted clock garnitures with porcelain elements that have come up at auction recently have brought prices ranging from $600 to $1,200; yours falls in the middle of this range, at $700-1,000; it may be worth more if you find a mark and can take/add a photo of it.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
