We believe it is from the late 1800s or early 1900s. It belonged to the sister of our grandfather. we think it is painted porcelain. Body and legs are stuffed but lower legs, hands, upper chest, shoulders and face are painted porcelain. It is in pretty good condition, our mother kept it on a stand in a doll display case. We don't believe the outer garment is original. we are not sure who manufactured the doll.
The doll is approximately 13" tall.
Hi Colleen,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
China dolls are a type of ceramic doll with glazed porcelain heads, typically with painted facial features and molded hair, paired with cloth or leather bodies. They were most popular during the mid-19th century and are rarely signed or marked, making it difficult to specifically pinpoint who made them. Eventually, doll makers - most notably those in France and Germany - turned to making doll heads out of bisque (unglazed) porcelain and attaching them to cloth or composition (a mixture of sawdust and glue) - and China dolls became outdated.
I agree that the pink dress is probably later but the sleeves underneath may be original.
In the current market, unless China dolls come with considerable provenance, they rarely bring more than $100-150 for the larger ones (20 inches or more), with smaller dolls selling for less than that. It's unfortunate but this is likely an example in which sentimental value (for it having been in your family for so long) outweighs its market value...but I think it's important to be honest and realistic about current market values.
