Hi Gina,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Founded in the 19th century in Thuringia, Simon & Halbig specialized in high-quality bisque doll heads, supplying both their own dolls and leading firms such as Kämmer & Reinhardt. Their work helped standardize expressive, lifelike features—sleep eyes, realistic modeling, and fine painting—that defined the “golden age” of dollmaking (c. 1890–1915). These dolls reflected changing ideas about childhood, sentimentality, and realism during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Widely exported to Europe and the United States, Simon & Halbig dolls became aspirational luxury toys and enduring collectibles. Today, they are prized for craftsmanship, artistry, and their role in shaping modern doll design. The market for antique and vintage dolls, however, has changed greatly, with significant collectors aging out and increasingly few new collectors joining the field to take their place.

Dolls are a collecting category that isn't quite a refined as that for coins, stamps or trading cards, with different "grades" given. The things that a doll collector would look for - original head, condition, rarity of size, original clothing - are all ones that your doll would score high marks for and if this doll had been offered at auction 20 or 30 years ago, it would certainly have sold for high three or low four figures.

There are still a few auction houses - such as Theriaults, which is a doll specialist, Bertoia's, Morphy's and Hake's - that have dedicated doll sales and if you're interested in selling this, I would advise you to place it with a seller who has a deep knowledge and appreciation for the market and knows the collectors looking for such an example.

Based on my research of comparable dolls offered at auction, this would likely sell for between $400 and $600 at auction but a specialist auctioneer who examines this in person might find elements warranting a higher estimate.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

An antique Simon and Halbig bisque-head and composition body doll
retailed by Kämmer & Reinhardt, late 19th/early 20th Century
With painted bisque head stamped "Simon & Halbig / K&R", on a jointed composition body, petticoat probably original, gold dress and shoes with machine stitching and plastic buttons (suggesting possibly later) and later crocheted apron.
28 inches long
CONDITION: Largely original; clothing possibly later
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$ 400-600*
