Five inch doll (unsure of what material she is made of) including clothing trunk, dresses, accessories , etc. photo attached of maker on the bottom of trunk.
Doll is 5 inches tall, trunk is 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 x 6” tall.
Hi Leslie,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The remnants on the label on the underside of the trunk identify this as having been retailed at Au Nain Bleu, the oldest toy store in the world; it was located at 27 Boulevard des Capuchins in Paris. The first store opened in 1836 and had a huge success. Over the years, the brand developed itself, and lived major historical events. Today, Au Nain Bleu is a real point of reference in the business, in terms of quality and refinement.
A mignonette doll is a term, particularly in the collecting world, for a small, diminutive doll, often referred to as a "poupée de poche" or "pocket doll" in French. These dolls are typically made of bisque (a type of porcelain) and are small, often 5-10 inches in height, with a five-piece body, meaning they have a separate head, torso, and limbs.
This is a wonderful time capsule. The fact that she has survived with her original trousseau - in it's original trunk-like box - makes this a very special doll. A doll of similar size - but lacking her trousseau - sold for $1,400 recently; since yours HAS all her clothing and trunk, she has a value of $1,500-2,500.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique French All-Bisque Mignonette with Pretty Antique Costume, with trousseau,
late 19th Century
With painted bisque head wearing long blond wig, with bisque limbs, wearing a linen and lace dress, her feet painted with black stockings and yellow Mary Jane shoes. Unmarked. Underside of trunk retains Au Nain Bleu retailer's label.
Doll: 5 inches tall
Trunk: 6 inches tall by 8-1/2 inches long by 5-1/2 inches deep
CONDITION: This doll appears to be in very good condition.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$1,500-2,500*

Thank you for the updated information and assessed value. It so nice to know the history of this wonderful doll! Having said that, I feel it should be in the hands of a true collector and I would like to find a buyer for it. Can you help me with this process?
Good morning, Leslie,
Are you interested in selling this through auction or going with a dealer?
Also, are you in Columbus OHIO? Knowing where you are will help us find you an appropriate buyer.
Thanks,
Delia
Good morning,
I’m looking for the most expedient way, not sure which will be a better fit.
I am in Columbus, GA, about 100 miles south of Atlanta.
I really appreciate your guidance through this!
Leslie Baughman
While I don't know any doll collectors in that specific area, you've got several options:
Mearto has recently partnered with Catawick, an online platform that conducts auctions around the world; because of our partnership, linked appraisals by a Mearto appraisal will skip the usual vetting process. For more information on that, see the Catawiki link on our page ( https://www.mearto.com/catawiki). If that's something you'd like to consider, please use THIS link (https://prf.hn/click/camref:1101lHtv3/pubref:delia), which will expedite the process for you.
Alternatively, now that you know what this is worth, you can post this on a local marketplace of your choice OR you can reach out to local auction houses who might be interested in selling this on your behalf. One prominent one in Atlanta is Ahlers & Ogletree, or you can try Everard in Savannah.
A doll auctioneer you might reach out to is Theriault - they are the leading doll auction house, though they are in Maryland.
Best of luck with this!
Delia
I double checked the feet and neck/body but don’t see any markings. The only thing I see as far as makers go is the half label on the back of trunk. If you need a better image of it, please let me know. Thank you.
