It is a family heirloom. It dates back to at least the 1880s. It was probably purchased in Ithaca, NY. My uncle was told that it was made of chestnut, but he doubts that's true. At least the finish is chestnut. The dark wood is faux finish and not some type of exotic burl wood. All the hardware is original except for one drawer pull, which my uncle bought in SF in the 1980s.

With the ebonized detailing, this shows the influenced of the Eastlake style, which was very popular at the end of the 19th Century.
Aside from the burled panels, this is probably maple or cherrywood and has a fair-market value of $400-600, based on the results comparable chests are selling for at auction.

Of rectangular section, the molded edged top with shaped backsplash and two candle-shelves over a corresponding case fitted with three burl-veneer paneled long drawers with cast brass drop pulls, with ebonized trim, on a box base.
Height: 41 inches overall; case height: 31 inches; width: 31 inches; depth: 17 inches
CONDITION: This chest appears to be in good condition; value assumes no breaks, repairs, losses or additions.
