Oversized antique portrait in gold frame. Subject is believed to be the wife of the original owner of an historic home in Lewisburg, TN. Artist unknown. The state museum suggested that the painter was most likely a traveling artist and it would be difficult to identify him/her. Both the painting and the frame appear to be in generally good condition with wear in line with age and use.
39" x 34" x 2.5"
I purchased this on Facebook Marketplace from a seller just outside of Nashville, TN. He acquired it in 2022 via estate sale directly from the historic 1840s Southern Greek Revival home in which it had been kept and displayed by the same family for roughly 200 years.
Dear Emily,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on canvas with 39 x 34 inches measurements. The painting depicts a portrait of a woman in a black dress holding a small red book in her hands. The painting is not signed and the style and the costume indicate a dating around d 1840s or 1850s. Such portraits were often made by unidentified artists who specialized in portraits because there was a recognizable demand for portraits at this time.
Comparable objects were recently offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in medium condition and no severe damage is visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 200 to 400 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Gregory

Hi! Thanks so much for your appraisal. Is there any way to edit the description of the item? When the appraisal comes back, it often has information in it that I would like to incorporate into the description that accompanies the item on the marketplace. I have not been able to figure out how to accomplish this.
