I bought this at a very reputable antique dealer about 10 years ago called plantation galleries in Mobile, Alabama. I believe it is an Oushak and it is in very good condition.
Approx 9x12
Hi Beth,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Yes, this is an Oushak (also spelled Ushak) carpet, of a highly regarded type of Turkish rug originating from the town of Uşak (Oushak) in western Anatolia, Turkey. These carpets have been prized for centuries for their large-scale patterns, luminous wool, and soft color palettes, and are considered some of the finest examples of Ottoman weaving traditions that date back to the 15th and 16th centuries.
While new carpets of this size can retail for a few thousand dollars - and vintage/gently used ones selling for a couple thousand dollars - when they come to auction they do not bring quite so much; I would expect a reputable and knowledgeable auction house to estimate this at $1,000-1,500.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A vintage Turkish Oushak hand-loomed gold wool carpet
probably early/mid 20th Century
In an allover gold and earth-tones palette with motifs of paisleys and stylized floral elements.
9 by 12 feet
CONDITION: Minor fraying along the edges visible, with some minor fading and wear and losses to selvedges (fringe end)
PROVENANCE: Acquired at Plantation Galleries, Mobile, Alabama, circa 2015
$ 1,000-1,500*
