I believe this to be a brass Kendi. It measures approx. 9" tall and 11" long. It weighs approx. 4 lbs. 6 oz. and is hollow inside. I did contact an auction house in the UK that had a similar item ( WJM Antiques ) and this was their response : "Hi Stacy, Nice item - of similar construction and origin as the example on my website. The museum in Singapore a great source of information on Malay brass work - here’s a link to their database:- https://www.roots.sg/learn/collections/list?coloffcat=644c4ec9d15b4466933d7d492682f6e3&page=1 Regards, Will Mattin"
I discovered this in an old box in my mother's garage. We were moving her into assisted living due to Alzheimers. She is unable to assist us with any information on the item due to her disease.
Hello Stacy,
Thank you for your appraisal inquiry with Mearto. I am very sorry about the delay in your appraisal and I am very grateful for your patience. I am very sorry to hear about your mom's health and I will keep her in my thoughts.
The item presented appears to be brass Malay kendi, featuring zoomorphic/aquatic designs. Based on the photos, It appears the object dates to the 19th century, possibly into the early 20th century and is likely from the Sumatran region.
Unfortunately, the auction results of these items have declined in the past years. Your object appears to be a fine example. The estimate provided is based on recent auction estimates and results of comparable Indonesian kendi in similar size. Please note asking or dealer prices may vary. I do hope the market picks back up for these items. This is a very interesting piece. Thank you and please take care
