Hi Suzanne,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Jean Pouyat was a prominent figure in the 19th-century French porcelain industry, particularly known for his role in Limoges porcelain production. He was a member of a well-established porcelain-making family in Limoges, France, a city internationally renowned for its high-quality porcelain. The Pouyat family had been involved in ceramic production since at least the late 18th century.
Around 1842, Jean Pouyat established or reorganized a porcelain factory in Limoges under his name: J.P. Pouyat, with the mark seen on your plate: J.P./L. FRANCE. This factory produced high-quality whiteware (blanks) that were used both domestically and exported to be decorated elsewhere, including American studios and porcelain decorators, particularly during the hand-painted china craze of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
There is no clear evidence that a painter named Rémy formally worked for Jean Pouyat’s Limoges factory, suggesting that Remy was outside of Limoges, painting one of Pouyat's blanks.
While known makers and decorators can command a premium over unknown makers, this skill of the decoration of this plate speak for itself and it has a fair-market value of $125-175.
