This saber was owned by Norman FA Muser, an LTC from the US Army who served in WWII, Korean and Vietnam wars. There is a name "J.A. REED" in the blade itself as well as "DB Howell & Co Masonic Temple | New York" Norman was born in 1920 and died in 1983. Not sure when he received this saber and if it is rightfully his. Could be given by JA Reed.
It has never been exhibited. Sitting in an attic for decades.
Dear Mike,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. My sincere apologies for the delay with the appraisal.
The presented object appears to be a Masonic sword belonging to the "DB Howell & Co Masonic Temple | New York" and was owned and dedicated with an etching on the blade to a person with the name "J.A. REED". Such knight templar swords were custom made by many different producers. In this case there is no producer stamp or similar which is not unusual. This is a better quality version with an gildet hilt and probably an golden color but brass scabbad. It could be made in the late 19th century regarding the typography.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 200 to 400 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
