Blown cranberry glass globe lantern with fixed tin top , loop handle and removable tin base. Someone has repainted the tin. It measures 15.5" tall and about 8" in diameter . I've heard they used these in the transportation industry as emergency stop lights. Some call them skaters lamps ...

Hi Deborah,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The value would have been more for this if the tin had not been repainted; collectors of these mid 19th century lanterns (and other lighting forms) like to see the oxidation and aged patina as it is the best way to indicate true age and authenticity of the light.
If this were a railroad lantern, it would have a cage-like frame that would protect the globe.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique American spiral-blown cranberry glass lantern
