The value would have been more for this if the tin had not been repainted; collectors of these mid 19th century lanterns (and other lighting forms) like to see the oxidation and aged patina as it is the best way to indicate true age and authenticity of the light.
If this were a railroad lantern, it would have a cage-like frame that would protect the globe.

The spiral turned glass ovoid globe with peaked ebonized tole (painted tin) top with single loop strap handle, and pierced ebonized tole foot. Apparently unmarked
