What does this mean?

Hi Gregory,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

This is a vintage ornate metal - possibly silver - filigree purse, possibly of Chinese or Japanese origin. You might look for tiny hallmarks that look like Chinese characters or chop marks and if you see them and can photograph them clearly (this can be VERY difficult), I would be happy to see if I can read the marks and identify the maker.

Such purses were most popular in the West (the US, UK and Europe) from the late 19th century through the early 20th century, roughly 1880–1930. They were imported through treaty ports and export firms after China's opening and Japan's Meiji-era modernization. They met the demand stemming from a craze for Aesthetic Movement and Japonisme, which prized intricate handwork and exotic materials. Additionally, this quality of silver metalwork was demonstrated at World’s fairs and by luxury retailers in Europe and the U.S., where they would have been widely seen.

These purses were admired for their delicate wirework, repoussé panels, and silk linings, and were marketed as refined souvenirs or evening accessories. Today, they’re collected as examples of export silver, blending Asian craftsmanship with Western fashion tastes.

Similar silver purses that have been sold at auction lately have brought prices ranging from $400-600, depending on the weight of the purse and quality of the silver (if this is tested and determined to be brass, the value would be quite a bit less, probably around $100.)

If you're looking to sell this at auction with a reputable fashion house with a global reach, you might reach out to Augusta Auctions (Vermont), Litchfield Auctions (CT), Ahlers & Ogletree (GA), Everard (SC), Bonhams (CA or NY) or Leland Little (NC).

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A near antique Japonisme style silver filigree purse

Of rectangular section with shaped foldover cover, the body with birds and foliage, single strap, possibly marked
