Early 1900s or teens bear. Mohair, red, white and blue, and stuffed with straw, I think. About 19" tall. Some wear as expected but overall good condition. No rips or tear that I see, He's very old. Very cool. Not able to find anything similar online, so curious to know his age and value.
19 tall
Hi Heidi,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
A comparable bear but in much better condition sold for about $1,000 a year ago (https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/124750417_early-turn-of-last-century-american-uncle-sam-teddy-bear-38-cm-tall-standing-and-arm-jointed); unfortunately, the condition of YOUR bear is such I would not expect it to bring more than half that, and probably not even as much even though this is an old and relatively rare bear.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique American Uncle Sam Harlequin Teddy bear
attributed to the Art Novelty Company of New York, circa 1908
In a patriotic-palette Harlequin design with red, white and blue mohair, felt paw pads, jointed body with excelsior stuffing, black or navy collar, glass eyes.
19 inches tall
CONDITION: in well-loved but relatively poor condition with extensive wear
PROVENANCE: acquired at auction
$300-500*
