These chairs were bought in the 1970s from an estate sale in upstate New York. I have had them since 1985 and have had them reupholstered twice. They were described as Victorian Mr and Mrs chairs. I was told they were mahogany wood. They are in excellent condition.
Hi Lauri,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The term "Mr and Mrs" were not period terms but rather assigned in the early 20th Century; regardless, they reference and single out as special those chairs used by the master and mistress of the house. The rocking chair would likely have been used by the "lady" of the house.
These combine elements of the Victorian period with those of the Art Nouveau period and were probably made around 1910-1920.
Regrettably, the market for chairs such as these is quite soft at the moment - most that come to auction today rarely sell for more than $200 each; as a pair, you might get $500 for them together. I suspect you have spent more in reupholstering than that but I want you to have a realistic idea of their current value, in case decisions are being made as to what to do with them.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A matching Victorian Art Nouveau armchair and rocking armchair
circa 1910-1920
Each with arched crest with scrolling ends and flaring wings, scrolled arms on serpentine supports and rounded seats, on short cabriole legs; one chair on rockers. Unmarked.
(DIMENSIONS)
CONDITION: Both chairs have been reupholstered.
PROVENANCE: Purchased in the 1970s from an upstate NY estate sale
$ 300-500 for the two together*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
