Dear Wim,
Thank you for choosing Mearto for your online appraisal.
Based on the images and information you provided, this item is:
A beautiful Brass (with copper and silver incisions) Ardhanarishvara sculpture, without signature and hence its exact date remains unsure. Ardhanarishvara is a composite form of the Hindu deity Shiva, representing the union of the masculine and feminine aspects of the divine. The word "Ardhanarishvara" is derived from the Sanskrit words "ardha" meaning half, "nari" meaning woman, and "ishvara" meaning Lord. Together, it signifies the "Lord who is half woman."
The iconography of Ardhanarishvara typically depicts Shiva with his characteristic attributes such as matted hair, crescent moon, third eye, and snake around his neck. On the feminine side, Parvati is adorned with jewelry, a flowing garment, and sometimes holds a lotus or a mirror.
