Description

"Pompeian Herm" A herm, or statue in the form of a square stone pillar surmounted by a bust or head, dates from ancient Greece, the term evolving from the Greek god Hermes whose bust appeared on numerous early carvings. Found in Pompei, these particular herms date from 100 B.C. and were used at the entrace to the atrium, a typical residential feature in larger homes. Numerous attempts to identify the busts as Roman public figures have failed. It is far more likely to be a family portrait connected with the house in which it was found.
