The appraised work is a woodblock print executed by Japanese artist Kiyoshi Saitō (1907-1997 titled 'Autumn.' The print depicts a stylized figure in an ambiguous background looking left at an unknown person or object. The artist was born in Fukushima but moved with his family to Hokkaido, where the young boy apprenticed with a sign painter. Saitō moved to Tokyo in 1932 and studied at the Hongo Painting Institute. While originally focusing on painting, after joining the Zokei Hanga Kyokai in 1938, woodblock printing became his primary medium. The estimate provided is based on comparables recently offered and sold at auction. The appraised work's size, composition, medium and condition (based on images provided), as well as the artist's current auction market were taken into consideration when determining the estimate. In many cases, pricing for similar examples available on the primary (retail) market vary, and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
