1.25" wide blade, 34.5" long steel straight blade. Engraved "Andria x Carifa x" (see photo) Scalloped engraving on the blade
It was part of my fathers sword collection - purchased in the UK
Dear Fenella,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a typical Scottish broadsword with a hilted basket of how it was typical for Scottish noblemen and Scottish troops in British service since the 18th century. This sword has no maker marks or proves marks to identify and date this piece. It was probably made in the 18th or 19th century by an unknown swordsmith.
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 250 to 600 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
Dear Fenella,
sadly I am not sure what these etchings in the blade could mean. It could be a personal dedication to a person or the location of a memorable event.
With kind regards,
Georg
Hi Georg,
What does the marking Engraved "Andria x Carifa x" on the blade mean?
Thanks,
